In April 1989, the first crack of light appeared behind the Iron Curtain with the massive support for Solidarnosc.
By June, Hungary had pulled back the curtain still further, allowing East Germans to cross over to Austria. But the symbol of a divided Europe remained the Berlin Wall. During the night of 9
November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, heralding a new dawn where stability in a secure environment could become a reality for all European citizens.
Today, 20 years later, with the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, European integration continues to build on the lessons learnt during the epic year which was 1989.
For this anniversary, the EUISS has invited several authors to look back at that period of renewed hope, to examine how it has helped form their vision of the future of the European
Union and how this process can be extended to its close neighbourhood.
In the video (extract from the EUISS Annual Conference 2009), Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission (1985- 1994), speaks about ' The European process : lessons learned after
the fall of the Berlin Wall '.
